7-13-21: We have recently been made aware of a mysterious illness that is affecting birds in the eastern part of the country. The illness seems to have started in the Washington D.C. area and has now affected bird populations in several states including Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
At this time, both State and Federal wildlife officials don’t know the exact scale of the outbreak nor exact cause of deaths, but they are actively working to identify the cause of these cases. They also ask that if you see birds with swollen or scabbing, crusty looking eyes, that you report your sighting to your state wildlife agency or DNR. Other symptoms include seizures and lack of coordination. The species that are the most affected seem to be Blue Jays, Common Grackles, European Starlings, and American Robins, though other species have also been affected.
