Attract woodpeckers to your yard with this reliable, heavy-duty bird feeder. The sturdy metal top and base are powder-coated in forest green and resist chipping or fading. The bird feeder has a stainless steel wire mesh specially designed to offer peanuts, mixed nuts or sunflower seeds to clinging birds like woodpeckers. The mesh tube keeps food levels visible so you know when it's time to refill. The feeder can be hung by its sturdy stainless steel bail wire, and the threaded base allows for pole-mounting or the attachment of a seed tray.
Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or
monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the
feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your
feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with
dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.
I found this feeder to be a favorite of my smaller birds. I bought shelled peanuts to go in it, but some were a little too big for the birds to get out. So I chop my peanuts a bit to make it easier for the birds to pull out. After two days, I put the peanuts that are left near the bottom in my tray feeder, and refill the peanut feeder again.
Almost perfect. I purchased a couple of these feeders for black oiled seed and peanuts. I have lots of woodpeckers, cardinals, finches, blue jays, juncos, nuthatches, sparrows, titmice,& wrens. While they worked great for the oiled seed, the birds didn't do so well getting the peanuts. I LOVE my woodpeckers & have 4 different kinds that visit my feeders (Downy, Red-bellied, Red-headed, & Pileated). So, I really want to be sure they can get the food they like best. I had an idea to modify the feeders with some spare parts from a feeder I had cracked & now the peanut feeders are the most popular feeders in my yard!
I have to agree with Terry’s review. I do not think openings are big enough even for shelled peanuts. My first peanut feeder broke from a different company and I thought I’d try this one. The birds are having a terrible time getting a nut out. It’s been days and the peanuts have not been eaten with plenty of birds trying, and I’d have to refill my old feeder daily!
This replaces my previous "metal mesh" type finch feeder. That one was virtually ignored by the birds... they LOVE this one. Thanks from me and the birds.
I have two peanut feeders that I have had for about 20 years. They are the older design that uses the aluminum purchase rod to hold the mesh tube in place. I no longer try to keep the squirts away from the peanuts. They won. They stay away from the house and they share with the blue jays, Wood peckers etc. I love the quality of the droll yankees products and their service. I also have several other types of Droll yankees feeders including the Flipper. The Flipper Is filled with sunflower Seed harts and is at least 10 years old and Is a great deal of fun when the new crop of squirts try it out.
I have 2 of these feeders which were purchased 10- 15 years ago. They finally are falling apart after constant use all that time. My feeders must be a previous design, since the mesh is connected to the base only by the metal perch which slides through the mesh and base. One of the perches has gone missing, so now the base will not stay on the feeder. The other one is now loose, and the perch slips out of place, currently hanging most of the way out, so I am in danger of that one falling apart as well. I looked for replacement perches and don't see them in parts. The mesh for both has been pulled on by squirrels I presume, and probably needs replacing as well. What do you recommend? I love having the peanuts, as we constantly have all sorts of birds enjoying them.
I bought a Droll Yankees at a local feed store, I went to the extra expense of buying a galvanized threaded pipe to mount it on as well as a flange to thread the pipe into, the flange made for easy mounting to my deck. The feeder held the peanuts and offered birds opportunity to feed. It also gave the Squirrels ample opportunity as well, Squirrels are very good with their teeth and made short order breaking the Stainless steel mesh and bail wire off the base of the unit. I didn't care to go through the warranty process, so I morphed the more durable top and bottom of the Droll Yankees with another makers center area I had salvaged which was much more substantial than Stainless steel mesh and bail wire on the original. Now it is truly Squirrel proof, I have enjoyed it for many years now trouble free, Squirrels can't break in. The one I have is maroon. Hope this is helpful.
Bought this from a local hardware store, I am very pleased with this so far. Overall design is very good with providing the birds to peck away at the peanuts.
This is a good high quality feeder, I am pleased with. I found the green color at a Farm & Fleet type store for only $20. The wire mesh has stood up against squirrel attacks. I was hoping to attract some new species to my yard, but it seems as though the House Sparrows like the peanuts too.
