High quality bird feeder that could use improvements to become a terrific contender. The quality of the materials, its construction and its high seed capacity make this feeder worth considering. The black cage is a general deterrent to small birds and they take a good while to begin to explore the seed being offered. However, once the cage is removed, they flock to the feeder. I wonder if a red or yellow cage would encourage better participation? The cage is a deterrent to gray and black squirrels but not red squirrels or chipmunks, which negates its usefulness, IMO. However, the large sheltering dome and small, slippery aluminum perches combine to thoroughly discourage all the varmints on my property from pillaging seed once the cage is removed! In fact, larger birds find it too difficult to feed. Removal of the cage reduces the weight of the unit, which is weighty when full of seed with the cage on, improve balance on feeder stand. Furthermore, my wife very much likes its looks without the cage, a development not to be ignored. Cageless, this feeder has become a small bird favorite that is immune to raids by mammals and large birds. I would recommend that Droll Yankees consider producing this feeder without a cage and adding a few improvements. There is a sturdy wire spring clamp that prevents the sheltering dome from rising too high. Another one of these below the dome would prevent its untimely decent. There are two places unwanted seed collects, at the perches and at the bottom of the tube. The aluminum perches do not have the same internal radius as the seed tube, resulting in gaps that collect seed and mold. I used plumber’s putty to fill each gap with good results. The angled plastic piece at the very bottom of the seed tube, which acts as its floor, allows some seed to slide down below it, making cleaning more of a chore than it ought to be. A water jet from a garden hose reduces cleaning drudgery quite a bit, I might add. With a substantial reduction in price, this feeder with the above recommended changes would take top honors, IMO.

Not sure what stars I can give as I just got this a few days ago. Unfortunately not a single bird will venture in to try it. I just saw a sparrow though jump inside and then straight out. Does it take a while for the little birds to feel safe entering through the cage?

Hello Joanne, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder. We would suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds must use the new one. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon, and please keep us updated! If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST).

Just had this feeder (purchased first one about 2 years ago) bounce off the hook (we think!? squirrels!? it's hanging), crash to the ground (hangs off our deck and had some cracks already around the screws) and shatter at the base. I will not look for a refund, as next time we will close the S hook that it was hanging on - that's on us! But I will agree with "Carol" that it is the hardest feeder we own ( and we own a bunch!) to clean. Especially inside, right under each port. Having written that, I'll take a look at the video posted above and buy some more crazy brushes! They are also one of the only feeders I've found that the bigger birds can't just stretch in to feed - the cage is nice and wide around the tube. And Tufted Titmice can get in! Some tube feeders I looked at kept them out. We love our titmice! I do plan on buying 2 more of these feeders today!! The pros definitely outweigh the cons for me here!

Best squirrel proof feeder we have found. They climb, they stick their little paws in and their head in but htey can't reach the food. The smaller birds figured it out pretty easy, but it took the cardinals a few weeks to become really accustomed to it. 2 months into it and so far so good.

Hello Warren, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. The Droll Yankees Lifetime Warranty against squirrel damage covers damage directly done by squirrels, e.g. chews to the feeder that make the feeder unusable due to the damage. It also covers defective parts, which are defects or flaws that inhibit the correct use of the feeder. The warranty applies to the original purchaser for as long as they own the feeder. The Lifetime Warranty doesn’t cover falls (even if the squirrel makes the feeder fall; Droll Yankees is not responsible for how a feeder is hung), damage caused by weather, or ordinary wear-and-tear of the product that will happen over time (like everything, bird feeders gradually lose their luster and need fixing up; defective parts become obvious soon after purchase, not after years of normal use). Defects are present at the time of purchase and manifest themselves promptly; normal wear-and-tear happens gradually over time. The Lifetime Warranty doesn’t cover cosmetic damage that doesn’t compromise the effectiveness of the feeder (scraped or peeling paint, scratches or yellowing to the tube, etc.), even if the scratching or scraping is caused by squirrels. Entire feeders are not replaced. Only individual defective parts and squirrel-damaged parts. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7:30 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Thurs & 7:30 am – 2 pm Fri (EST). We look forward to helping you get back to feeding the birds!
