Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.
Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

Easy to use large feeder
I like to put out really good seed, and don’t want the big birds and squirrels hoarding the feeder, so this one looks great. Just started using it. If it’s easy to clean, I’ll say it’s a winner. So far so good

I replaced a large triple tube feeder which was always populated with all kinds of birds, but ruined by squirrels. The new feeder has been up for a week now, and we have not seen ONE bird on the feeder. I am completely perplexed and entirely bummed out. I’m hoping it’s just a learning curve for the birds, but I’m getting more skeptical as the days draw on.

This feeder was an excellent way to keep the smaller birds fed, until the larger birds figured out the perch only drops so far down. Once they got past the perch drop fear, they could happily empty the feeder. I could live with that however, even after installing a rain dome, the rain seems to collect in the feeder causing the feed to get wet, which then goes moldy. To me, this is a design issue. For the cost of the feeder, I am not happy with this product. It's too bad as I can see the care and craftsmanship in the product and quality parts. Sadly, I have wasted close to $200 Canadian on it too.
Hello Linda, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. An option for deterring bully birds is to change the type of seed in your feeder. Try substituting your usual mixed seed or sunflower seed with safflower seed. Most songbirds enjoy safflower seed but bully birds will typically avoid it. After using safflower seed for a few weeks you can try using your regular seed mix. In most cases, the bully birds will not return to the feeder after the safflower seed has been offered. We are sorry to hear that your feeder is collecting moisture. This could be due to a hairline crack, or heavy rain that is being blown sideways as opposed to straight down. If there is severe weather, we recommend bringing the feeder indoors until it passes. Please examine your tube for any hairline cracks, to be sure there is no moisture leaking inside. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). Thank you for flying with our flock, and happy birding!
