    Not even Squirrell-resistant

Squirrels were feeding happily from this within minutes of putting it up. The outer “cage” that’s supposed to come down and cover the feeding holes simply doesn’t. It barely budges from the weight of the squirrell. At first I thought maybe the spring was jammed somehow but it’s not. It simply requires more force to pull the “cage” down than is generated by the weight of an average American red Squirrell (which is even smaller than the better-known grey squirrell). I think it might be at least somewhat squirrell-resistant feeder if the spring resistance were adjusted or adjustable. However there are additional reasons why I wouldn’t buy this feeder again: it doesn’t hold nearly as much seed as it looks like it would, and the perches are too short for my larger bird friends (eg cardinals) to perch on and eat. Reading through Squirrell X’s response to all the other negative comments is an exercise in frustration as well. Rather than respond to the legitimate complaints about the feeders performance, they just blame the consumer. If you have to locate a feeder is such a hard to reach spot that a squirrel can’t possibly reach it (which means the consumer also can’t reach it to refill), then you could just use a regular feeder...there’d be no need to pay extra for a squirrel “proof” feeder!

Hi MM i., Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X4 Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder with Push Button Top. We are sorry to hear that you were dealing with squirrels accessing your feeder within minutes of hanging it up. From seeing the picture you attached, this is because you hung the feeder from your house. This is not what we consider to be proper placement of your feeder. What makes a squirrel-proof feeder squirrel proof are three things: Proper Placement, Design and Materials Used. Since the squirrels have extremely easy access to this feeder, due to improper placement, then yes the squirrels will find a way to access the seed, as they are extremely intelligent and very persistent. The cage will descend as designed to, when the weight of an average grey squirrel is applied to it. So, if your squirrels are red squirrels, which are much smaller and lighter, they will be too lightweight to trigger the weight-activation on this product and others like it. Proper placement is even more important, for your situation. We do provide the capacity of the feeder on our website, so we are sorry you thought it would hold more. If you purchased this feeder on a different website and the capacity was listed incorrectly, please let us know and we will work on correcting that. You should be able to properly place your feeder, and still have access to it. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. We hope this information helps you! We will be sharing this information with our Product Development and Design Team as well as our Engineering Team, to see if we can make changes to the tension of the spring to help with smaller squirrel species. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Customer Service Team at 1-800-352-9164. Thank you.

    Expensive, and squirrels love it!

Same experience as the other reviews -- squirrels broke it open within hours. I hung it 8 feet in the air; the squirrels crawled out on the wire and quickly emptied it out. Hoped for a refund from the store where I bought it, but no. Maybe from the manufacturer? It's certainly not "squirrel-proof." It's not even squirrel resistant.

Hi Bob, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X4 Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder with Push-Button Top. We are sorry to hear that squirrels accessed your feeder. When you hung the feeder 8 ft in the air, did you hang it from a tree or from your house? Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on, so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. Our squirrel proof feeders have specific design features and use higher quality materials. Those two aspects in conjunction with proper placement will provide great squirrel-proof protection. We unfortunately cannot offer you a refund, since you purchased the feeder from a retailer, and they handled your transaction. If your feeder was damaged, we would be happy to send you a new one, one time, free of charge. Please give our Customer Service Team a call at 1-800-352-9164 and they would be happy to assist you!

    Squirrel x feeder

First day the squirrel hung from the wire and quickly he pulled the metal off that surrounds the seed hole. Not squirrel resistant. I removed the feeder and hung it in a new spot and he did it again! Thinking maybe the metal hole guards need to be attached to each other across the feeder so they can’t be pulled off.

Hi S.D., Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X4 Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder with Push-Button Top. We are sorry that you’re having no success at all deterring squirrels from your feeder. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. We can completely sympathize with your squirrel frustration. Our goal is to help restore your faith in our products by offering you some squirrel-proof advice. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, I am confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds and thwarting squirrels!

    Great design vs. persistent squirrels

The design works great until the squirrels have time to figure it out. The feeder is very heavy duty, but they've torn out one of the four plastic inserts that holds back the seeds allowing them to reach in and grab handfulls. I've covered the hole with cardboard and ductape because they lost the insert, but that's not such a good long term fix and I was hoping to get more than a few months out of the feeder. Not sure it matters, because they've figured out how to hang by their toes and reach under the barrier. Still, it draws the birds in too and I really like seeing the wildlife around my backyard. It's a 5 star bird feeder at a 5 star price tag, it just gets 4 stars from me because my squirrels are jerks and I don't want to spend that much money on a replacement feeder just to have them destroy it again.

Hi Scott, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X4 Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder with Push-Button Top. We appreciate you as our customer and we are sorry to hear you are dealing with some intelligent and persistent squirrels. Since you have only had the feeder for a few months, we would be happy to replace the feeder for you, one time, free of charge. We also have some suggestions, on how to further squirrel proof your feeder, which we think will help in deterring the squirrels. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. We have a great article about this as well on our website here: https://morebirds.com/blogs/news/how-to-successfully-squirrel-proof-your-bird-feeders?_pos=3&_sid=4aa68e6ac&_ss=r. Please give our Customer Service Team a call, if you would like us to send you a new Squirrel-X X4 feeder.
