Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place a bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.

United StatesHigh marks for the design. However, squirrels eventually find a way to grab on to the feeder in a way that negates the spring loaded feature that covers each feed hole while down. Even early on while effective, squirrels eventually tore off the metal guards covering the feeder holes and were able to easily access bird seed. I've had the feeder les than 6 months. Are the guards replaceable? I'm missing one as I inadvertently tossed out the first guard that was found on my grass not knowing it was a feeder part. The adhesive is not strong enough to keep the squirrels from their destructive ways. What I do like about the feeder is having the ability to hang a weighted object on the bottom perches between designated feeding windows, thereby reducing the amount of seed eaten in a given day.

Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success.
