Great feeder - how do you keep deer from emptying it?

I love this bird feeder. The squirrels do not even try anymore and the birds are happy. Recently the deer have been emptying it at night. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

    I love it!

This is my second Whipper Bird Feeder. I hang them from a pergola and the squirrels can't get to them. I like that the larger "meaner" birds cant stay on the perch. This gives the smaller breeds like nut hatches and finches a chance at the seed.

I'm not sure any bird feeder should be characterized as "squirrel-proof." And I would change the name. I had your feeder attached to a large tree denude of branches, hanging well over 4ft from the ground. It did not deter the squirrel from hanging upside down

Hello Jay, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. I am sorry that youre having no success at all deterring squirrels from your feeders. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that theyre smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birdsour own challenge toois deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. I can completely sympathize with your squirrel frustration. My goal is to help restore your faith in our products by offering you some squirrel-proof advice. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on, so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, I am confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds and thwarting squirrels!

So this is a pretty good bird feeder. However, squirrels had little problem figuring out how to hang on to the bottom without touching the drop down perches and chow down. Look at my review on Amazon for a video

    Eric H.

I've had your Yankee Whipper since buying it on Amazon in September, 2019. Yes, placement is CRITICAL to keeping off squirrels and so far they have been foiled - so I give it 5 stars! The problem I'm having now is Doves, Blue Jays and Grackles managing to sit on the perches and flap their wings enough to get seed and scare the smaller birds! Any ideas for preventing this? I read above in the other comments that the perch tension is not adjustable - is that still true? Thanks!

Hello Eric, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We have developed springs with 75% tension, so that it takes less weight to activate the collapsing-perch mechanism, which is pre-calibrated for the heavier weight of the squirrels. With the reduced tension, you should have more success deterring starlings, grackles, and other nuisance birds. Please email drollbird@drollyankees.com with your Full Name, Address, and Phone Number for shipping purposes, and Ill place the order for a set of 75% tension springs, at no charge! Well also send along the installation instructions. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). We look forward to get you back to feeding the birds!
