Birds That Use This Feeder
Type Of Feed
I removed the base of the feeder to clean and can't get the springs with the little hooks that protrude into the proper position. The feeder is now permanently in the closed-up-so-the-squirrels-can't-get-in mode. Do the sharp ends of these springs point up or down? What keeps the tube from dropping down when lightweight birds are feeding? I need a visual. Cleaning directions are too vague for me.
Hi Roberta, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X1 Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeder with Spring-Loaded Perches. We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble putting your feeder back together after cleaning. To re-install the springs, the curled end should be installed first through the slot in the sheet metal shroud. Then you can turn the spring into place, the center is held by the cylindrical boss, with the wire connecting the curled end part of the spring facing towards the center. The straight end can now be forced towards the outside of the feeder and rest on the plastic tab in the corner of the hopper. You should hear or feel it snap into place. Press the spring to the bottom of the cylindrical boss to ensure proper function. Then you can reinstall the base. We will make note that the instructions need an update and we apologize for the inconvenience. We hope this helps you get your feeder back to functioning mode and that you can get back to feeding the birds! At first, I really liked this feeder, but the squirrels figured out how to stand on the pole without closing the guard tight so they chewed the plastic and the seed leaks out now. My second complaint is about the wire hanger they use which the wires break and cut my hands when I carry the feeders to fill them. Actually, I live on a lake with a lot of wind and they swing in the wind so hard that one of the wires broke and the feeder was on the ground with my squirrels enjoying themselves on Christmas morning.
Hi Renee, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X-1 Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeder. We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing squirrel damage on your feeder. We would be happy to replace this feeder for you, free of charge. We will reach out to you via email to get that order placed for you. We appreciate your business and look forward to getting this resolved for you! The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. For the wind, if there is any way to place your feeder in a way that it is protected from direct wind, that would help solve the issue of the feeder blowing around, falling and loss of seed. It would also make a much more comfortable feeding experience for the birds that use it too. We hope this is helpful and again we will reach out to you via email to get that order placed for you. Thank you for flying with our flock!
The biggest complaint I have is the amount of disassembly and reassembly required, with 8 screws and 2 springs to take it apart for thorough cleaning. I like to clean my feeders every couple weeks and it's a real time consuming chore with this feeder. That's enough to keep me from ever buying another one, and the reason I didn't give this a higher star rating. This feeder is good at being squirrel resistant, until they figure out how to hang upside down from the top. So, it needs a baffle above it. It has helped my seed last longer. The larger birds like starlings are just heavy enough to partially activate the spring to close the feeder ports about half way, preventing them from raiding all the seed. The seed stays fairly dry and there are 3 compartments if you want to use different types of seed in each one. Larger seeds like peanuts may block the feeding ports once in awhile, but it works great with black oil sunflower and the waste free bird seed mix. It also holds a lot of seed so you're not having to refill it daily. The design looks nice and allows for viewing all the birds visiting at one time, which I really appreciate.
Hi Terri, Thank you for leaving a review of the Squirrel-X, X1 Squirrel – Resistant Feeder with Spring – Loaded Perches. Keeping your feeders clean is a very important part of bird feeding. Bacteria and disease are spread through bird droppings on feeders, as well as from seed and hulls below the feeder. Damp feed and debris can cultivate a fungus. We recommend disinfecting your feeders once a month in winter and more often in hot and humid weather. Our Bird Feeder Brush (https://morebirds.com/collections/all/products/droll-yankees-bird-feeder-brush-bfb) makes cleaning easy. Do not use harsh chemicals, as they can be harmful to the birds and the environment. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher, as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. First, let the birds empty the feeder as far as they can. Shake out any remaining seeds and chaff. Wash all polycarbonate (plastic) parts in a 50/50 solution of hot water and white vinegar, rinse thoroughly. Remove all the hardware and clean with a mild soap & water solution, rinse thoroughly. Refill when completely dry. As you can see, the process of cleaning bird feeders can take a bit of time, when doing a thorough job. I will make note of your review and I am sure our design team will keep it in mind. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. The squirrel resistant bird feeder is excellent.. I like the easy fill and it is a well built feeder-very sturdy. Ive enjoyed using it for the birds.
Seed becomes wet easily and birds will not sit and eat at the feeder. Difficult to keep clean and clean when seed gets wet and becomes moldy. Will try one more time and if it doesn't work, out it goes to the junk. Certainly not worth the money I paid for it.
Hi GeoC, Thank you for contacting Classic Brands. We are sorry to hear that your feeder is collecting moisture. This could be due to a hairline crack, or heavy rain that is being blown sideways as opposed to straight down. If there is severe weather, we recommend bringing the feeder indoors until it passes. Please examine your tube for any hairline cracks, to be sure there is no moisture leaking inside. You can also adjust your feeders position by hanging it several inches under a roof or awning, or positioning it under a thick tree. You can also try add a baffle above the feeder which will add a layer of squirrel proofing and it will be rain proof as well.
