Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.

Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

    Yes and No

Seems to be squirrel resistant and they have not been able to damage it (yet?) However, larger feed like sunflower do not flow well; even smaller feed like ‘waste free’ doesn’t seem to present itself well. Each day I twirl the feeder to get more out to where the birds can access it.

    No Birds

I bought 2 of these feeders, hoping to keep the squirrels away. NO birds use the feeders. I filled both feeders weeks ago and they are still full. Waste of money.

Hello Whitney, Thank you for your review on Squirrel-X™ X8 Squirrel-Resistant Bird Feeder with Spring-Loaded Perches, 2.5 lb. capacity. We are sorry to see your overall disappointment with this feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. When there is something new in the yard that they are not be used to, they will need to warm up to it first. We suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds will be encouraged to use the new one. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon! If you have any other questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Consumer Service Team at 1-800-352-9164 or consumerservices@classicbrands.net. Thank you for flying with our flock!

    Feeder

The feeder works great for keeping the squirrels away but the seed doesn’t fall freely. There’s nothing blocking the seed from falling, it seems like the openings could be a little bigger. I use sunflower hearts.

    It took awhile

It took awhile before any birds would eat out this bird feeder, but now they swarm. The squirrels can't get anything out of this bird feeder.

    Not thrilled

Once a squirrel lands on a perch and locks the black sunflower seeds down, I need to reset it so birds can get seeds again. Squirrels have chewed the clear plastic on the inside of the feeder and created sharp edges. Black sunflower seeds do not readily fall into the small seed cup - I need to give the feeder a shake for seeds to fill cup.

Hello Eleanor, Thank you for your review on Squirrel-X™ X8 Squirrel-Resistant Bird Feeder with Spring-Loaded Perches, 2.5 lb. capacity. We are sorry to hear you are having issues with the squirrels chewing the plastic. There are 3 things that go into making a bird feeder squirrel-proof: Design, Materials Used and Proper Placement. We suggest to place a bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success. We hope this information helps!
