Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.
2 Year Manufacturing Warranty: Register your product online here. Once you register, the Forever Promise covers all feeders, accessories and components from manufacturing and materials defects for 2 years or 24 months from date of purchase. Droll Yankees will repair or replace, at its discretion, any manufacturing defect in these products free of charge. The Forever Promise does not cover damage through normal wear and tear, weather, or bear, raccoon or other animal damage.
Lifetime Squirrel-Damage Warranty: If your feeder is badly damaged by squirrels, to the extent that the effectiveness of the feeder is compromised, The Forever Promise also includes a lifetime warranty against squirrel-damage on all our products.
Birds That Use This Feeder
Type Of Feed
Birds love it
The feeder was easy to set up. Filled it with a finch blend (thistle and small seeds), and the finches, sparrows, and downy woodpeckers have had a field day. The only thing I don't like is that the top feeder perch is close to the top so within a day the feed is below this level. Minor quibble, other than this the feeder works well. Easy to fill. Haven't had it long enough to try cleaning it but it looks to be easier than the other model I have where the perches are an aluminum rod that goes all the way through and has to be removed for cleaning.
Hi Allen, Thank you for taking the time to offer your suggestions. We are always looking for ways to improve the birding experience for backyard birds and backyard birders, and the ideas and suggestions of innovative, thinking people are always welcome.
versatily finch feeder
Size is just right for weekly or biweekly filling, I mix safflower with a special finch feed (thistle, shaved sunflower) to attach a wider variety of birds including woodpecks, cardinals, grosbeaks, A seed tray will enhance the attracted some ground feeder birds, too. A weather shield &/or baffle keeps the whole tube protected in wet weather.
Birds do not like it
I too purchased this feeder and it's been up a full month and the birds don't go near it. They''l land but won't feed. Extremely disappointed. Which I read reviews before I purchased it. The one 4 star on this site was rated without even using it... Really? It is well made for sure and every other Droll Yankees feeder I've purchased over many years were are great. This one - NOT! I even removed other feeders and they still didn't eat... No stars for me but I couldn't submit without at least 1 star.
Hi Charles, We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder (once they've discovered it, place it far enough away from a tree so that the squirrels won't get to it). Adding something like a colorful ribbon can also help, as the movement in the wind can make the birds feel like another bird has found the feeder to be safe. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon!
I bought this feeder because I could clean it. But, the birds have not eaten from it. I made sure to buy fresh seed. I hung the feeder in the same location where I had previously hung thistle feeders which the finches visited. I live in an area where we get rain once a week or so. With 50% of the feeding stations at the bottom of the feeder, the birds have little access to ‘dry’ seed if rain has occurred. I am disappointed in this as a feeder. It does have easy access for cleaning. Because birds don’t feed from it, I will buy the less expensive feeders that I used prior to this purchase. I have owned this feeder for 1 year.
Hi Edna, Thank you for your review on Droll Yankees® Onyx Clever Clean® Thistle Finch Feeder with Easy Opening, 2 lb. capacity, 18 in. We are sad to hear you haven't had any birds yet. We do recommend in rainy areas to add a weather guard, https://morebirds.com/products/droll-yankees-squirrel-and-weather-guard-green-sqg?_pos=1&_sid=c6cf73eae&_ss=r Give your feeder some protection. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. We suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds will be encouraged to use the new one. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon! DY Onyx Clever Clean Finch feeder.
I haven't used it yet, as I have a previously purchased 2 lb Clever Clean finch feeder that the squirrels have all but destroyed, that I am using until I'm certain the bears and raccoons are in hibernation. I have a lot of trouble with feisty squirrels who eat all hot pepper feed etc. and then enlargen the holes on my reinforced finch feeders. Otherwise, I like the concept of the Onyx Clever Clean feeder.
Hi Barb, Thank you for leaving a review of the Droll Yankees Onyx Clever Clean Thistle Finch Feeder. It sounds like you have some tenacious squirrels that you are dealing with! I am not sure how you are placing your feeder in your yard, but proper placement is the key in your defense against the squirrels. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, I am confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you.
