Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place a bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.
Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

Birds That Use This Feeder
Type Of Feed
Our tenacious squirrels figured out how to hang on to 2 or 3 ports and eat from the others. They basically wrap themselves around the feeder without needing to putt any weight on the base "Tipper". I do not have this 8 ft. away from a tree, but if I did there wouldn't be any need for the "squirrel proof". At 8 ft. any feeder can be used, and there would be no reason to pay so much for the "proof".
Hello Ralph, Thank you for your review on Droll Yankees® Yankee Tipper® Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder, 5 lb. capacity, 28 in., Black. We are sorry to see your overall disappointment with this feeder. There are 3 things that go into making a bird feeder squirrel-proof: Design, Materials Used and Proper Placement. We suggest to place a bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success. We hope this information helps! I actually ordered the Yankee Flipper squirrel proof feeder but received the Yankee Tipper squirrel proof feeder. I didn’t realize I got the wrong feeder and used it. It works great! I was looking forward to seeing the squirrels spinning, but the tipper works and also keeps the large birds away too.

Along with Esperanza T., I also have the problem that the tray moves downward then springs birds up and off. There is just not enough stability for birds to land. This will even happens to one chickadee. I have to think that the spring loaded calibration can't come out just right in every feeder manufactured - even if tested. With all the positive reviews, even from people owning this for years, I assume that only a very few get through that are a little off. I've seen a boiler-plate answer from Droll Yankees given to Esperanza T. amount others, which I don't think addresses this issue at all: "Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. . ." What do I do?

I bought the Yankee Tipper this year and hung it from a six foot shepherd's hook in my back flower bed, close to the house and between two large evergreens. It took about a week for the birds to figure it out, and now they love it! Here in the northeast I'm finding it's popular with chickadees, doves, sparrows, jays and cardinals. The feeder will support three or four birds at once and the squirrels have left it alone to date. My advice if you buy this is to be patient, it may take a while for birds to figure out what it is. I'm very happy with this purchase.
I bought the Flipper, and it is awesome! We mainly have chickadees and titmice on it, but a Cardinal tries it every so often. We’ve seen squirrels fail miserably trying to get seed out of it. I wanted to try a different feeder and perhaps attract other birds. I bought the Tipper, but nothing will come to it. Some have tried it, but it’s been more than a month and the seed is still at the same level. I read the post that said birds need to get used to it. I placed it on the pole where the Flipper usually is. I also let the Flipper go empty. Still, nothing. It is hanging now near the Flipper, next to a tree branch, so I think it is protected enough. Is there a chance I have missed an assembly step? I checked that the plate is on right, and seed is at the ports... any suggestions will be appreciated!
Hello Suzanne, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. We would suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds must use the new one. Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder (once they’ve discovered it, place it far enough away from a tree so that the squirrels won’t get to it). Adding something like a colorful ribbon can also help, as the movement in the wind can make the birds feel like another bird has found the feeder to be safe. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon, and please keep us updated!
