Additional Information

Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.

Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

Birds love it, squirrels not so much.

The part I enjoy most, is not filling the feeder every day. Once a week seems to be the norm. Cleaning is easy with a brush and rinsing every couple of weeks. And watching the squirrels try every way possible to get seed out, is a show in itself.

    Squirrel problem resolved.

Couldn’t be better. The web to deter crashing birds didn’t work so well. The two squirrel free feeders, the whipper and the tipper work great. I bought a squirrel free feeder from another company and the squirrels destroyed it in a couple weeks. I have foiled them with your feeders. I love them both and so do the small birds that now get to eat also.

    My Birds Don’t Like It

Most all birds avoid this feeder. They will fly past this one to get to the other feeders with the same seed. The ones that do land on it, appear uncertain and immediately fly off it. No Squirrels….and No birds.

Hi Shammah, We're very sorry to hear you aren't seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder. We would suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds must use the new one. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon! If you have any other questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Customer Service Team at 1-800-352-9164 or consumerservices@classicbrands.net. Thank you for flying with our flock!

    Squirrels Figured It Out

Our tenacious squirrels figured out how to hang on to 2 or 3 ports and eat from the others. They basically wrap themselves around the feeder without needing to putt any weight on the base "Tipper". I do not have this 8 ft. away from a tree, but if I did there wouldn't be any need for the "squirrel proof". At 8 ft. any feeder can be used, and there would be no reason to pay so much for the "proof".

Hello Ralph, Thank you for your review on Droll Yankees® Yankee Tipper® Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder, 5 lb. capacity, 28 in., Black. We are sorry to see your overall disappointment with this feeder. There are 3 things that go into making a bird feeder squirrel-proof: Design, Materials Used and Proper Placement. We suggest to place a bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success. We hope this information helps!
