Birds Cannot Land at Factory Calibration

Along with Esperanza T., I also have the problem that the tray moves downward then springs birds up and off. There is just not enough stability for birds to land. This will even happens to one chickadee. I have to think that the spring loaded calibration can't come out just right in every feeder manufactured - even if tested. With all the positive reviews, even from people owning this for years, I assume that only a very few get through that are a little off. I've seen a boiler-plate answer from Droll Yankees given to Esperanza T. amount others, which I don't think addresses this issue at all: "Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. . ." What do I do?

    the birds love it!

I bought the Yankee Tipper this year and hung it from a six foot shepherd's hook in my back flower bed, close to the house and between two large evergreens. It took about a week for the birds to figure it out, and now they love it! Here in the northeast I'm finding it's popular with chickadees, doves, sparrows, jays and cardinals. The feeder will support three or four birds at once and the squirrels have left it alone to date. My advice if you buy this is to be patient, it may take a while for birds to figure out what it is. I'm very happy with this purchase.

I bought the Flipper, and it is awesome! We mainly have chickadees and titmice on it, but a Cardinal tries it every so often. We’ve seen squirrels fail miserably trying to get seed out of it. I wanted to try a different feeder and perhaps attract other birds. I bought the Tipper, but nothing will come to it. Some have tried it, but it’s been more than a month and the seed is still at the same level. I read the post that said birds need to get used to it. I placed it on the pole where the Flipper usually is. I also let the Flipper go empty. Still, nothing. It is hanging now near the Flipper, next to a tree branch, so I think it is protected enough. Is there a chance I have missed an assembly step? I checked that the plate is on right, and seed is at the ports... any suggestions will be appreciated!

Hello Suzanne, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. We would suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds must use the new one. Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder (once they’ve discovered it, place it far enough away from a tree so that the squirrels won’t get to it). Adding something like a colorful ribbon can also help, as the movement in the wind can make the birds feel like another bird has found the feeder to be safe. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon, and please keep us updated! I am very disappointed in the Yankee Tipper. I've had the feeder up for only 2 weeks & the squirrels have already figured out how to hang on the open ports & feed out of the other. I recorded one yesterday while hanging on & just eating away for over 1 minute and the only reason it got down was because I chased it away. They will tip off on occasion, but it's now more the norm for them to hang on & just eat & eat. Oh yeah, and I haven't seen any birds on this feeder at all. I wanted the Flipper originally, but didn't want to spend $200 for a bird feeder & settled for the Tipper. I should have gone to another website & gotten the one I really wanted for the same price I paid for this inferior model. I thought I would support the original manufacturer of the feeder, but I guess I got burnt on that one. I'm now sorry I spent $150 for a bird feeder that doesn't solve my squirrel problem.

Hello Debbie, Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. I am sorry that you’re having no success at all deterring squirrels from your feeders. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. I can completely sympathize with your squirrel frustration. My goal is to help restore your faith in our products by offering you some squirrel-proof advice. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on, so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, I am confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds and thwarting squirrels!

I have had this feeder for about 20 years - Love it! Works for all kinds of song birds, easy to fill, holds a lot of seed. Over the years, I have had to replace the seed cylinder several times due to discoloration. But it is located in full Florida sun all day, every day. The cylinder was very easy to order a new one from Droll Yankee. I love how the feeders have consistent parts that can be replaced as needed over the decades (kinda like the 'Weber' of bird feeders!). I am in the market for another feeder to add to the property ... I wish there were more options for squirrel-proof, pole mounted feeders. I have been looking at some other companies, but none come close to the same level of quality - but some of their designs look good.
