Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

    A Hit with the Birds!

The dual compartment sunflower seed and mixed birdseed feeder is a hit with finches, chickadees, nut hatches, and even a woodpecker. After hanging the feeder on a pole, it didn’t take long for the birds to start using it. The instructions indicate the types of seeds that should be used. While the title indicates thistle seed, the instructions indicate sunflower hearts or mixed birdseed for the smaller screen side. The top and bottom are metal and at first seemed to be sturdy. As you can see from the attached photo, after the feeder fell on the ground the bottom part was distorted from the fall. There are small drainage holes in the bottom. These holes could be a little larger because it didn’t take long for the accumulated seed to prevent water from draining. This feeder does require frequent cleaning, if you use it during warmer weather. Underneath the screw top is a small clear plastic washer. When you are refilling the feeder, you will want to keep track of the washer because it could easily be lost. So, if the birds loved it, why did I only give it 3 stars? Because the base could be a little sturdier, the drainage holes could be a little larger, and the small plastic washer can be easily lost.

    Nice Two Compartment Bird Feeder!

I have enjoyed using this bird feeder. I like it that I can load up one side for the finches and the other side for the cardinals. I also really like having the seed tray though I did have to purchase a squirrel baffle to keep the squirrels from sitting on the tray and enjoying an easy meal. Overall a great addition to our yard!!

Twin Dual-Compartment Sunflower/Thistle Screen Bird Feeder

Very attractive and sturdy. However, disappointing in that squirrels are able to access it by sitting on it and tilting it so seed spills out. For this reason, we give it a rating of 4. Like design concept, just wish it had more squirrel-proof features. We hung it on a cable between two trees and squirrels could walk the wire to access the feeder. We may try to add hot pepper to discourage the squirrels as we do like the feeder

Hi Lyle, We're sorry to hear you are having issues with squirrels accessing your bird feeder! Although this is not a squirrel-proof feeder, we would like to offer some squirrel-proofing tips: The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. We are also including a link to more squirrel-proofing advice: We hope this information helps!

    Finches Love It!

I gave it three stars because: I can only clean it in a bleach solution, not vinegar; the top, although comprehensively squirrel-proof, has a screw-fastener that needs a table for me to take apart = extra trip up and down the lawn; food gets wet through the screens during rainstorms; the only birds I feed who eat the nigella seed are ducks, when I finally tip it out (not goldfinches, not purple finches, cardinals, woodpeckers, blue jays…if somebody IS eating the nigella seed, they must only need three per day to get by : ( A person who uses bleach and nigella seed, who has a sheltered area out of wind and rain for hanging the feeder and whose hands are tip-top, for working a screw, daily would probably love this feeder!

Hi Deezle, The Wild Bird Feeding Institute recommends using a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part bleach in order to properly disinfect songbird feeders and prevent the buildup of bacteria. Unless you are disassembling the base of your feeder for cleaning, you should not need to use a screw fastener to remove the top lid for filling. Simpling twist the screw top counter-clockwise and remove the top lid. If there is severe weather, we recommend bringing the feeder indoors until it passes to prevent the seed from getting wet. We hope this information helps!
