Hi Annette, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X1 Squirrel-Resistant Bird Feeder. We are sorry to hear that you are dealing with squirrels being able to access your feeder. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. We can completely sympathize with your squirrel frustration. Our goal is to help restore your faith in our products by offering you some squirrel-proof advice. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, we are confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds and thwarting squirrels!

It Works!

Squireel -X X-1. 6th feeder I have tried. This one works! Squirrels are completely frustrated. Had an Audubon one that was supposed to be squirrel proof- the feeding hatches on two sides closed with pressure but the squirrels learned (in 3 days) to hang on the sides. They no longer even try with this one. Designed by someone with mechanical thoughtfulness.

Can't put it back together

I removed the base of the feeder to clean and can't get the springs with the little hooks that protrude into the proper position. The feeder is now permanently in the closed-up-so-the-squirrels-can't-get-in mode. Do the sharp ends of these springs point up or down? What keeps the tube from dropping down when lightweight birds are feeding? I need a visual. Cleaning directions are too vague for me.

Hi Roberta, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X1 Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeder with Spring-Loaded Perches. We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble putting your feeder back together after cleaning. To re-install the springs, the curled end should be installed first through the slot in the sheet metal shroud. Then you can turn the spring into place, the center is held by the cylindrical boss, with the wire connecting the curled end part of the spring facing towards the center. The straight end can now be forced towards the outside of the feeder and rest on the plastic tab in the corner of the hopper. You should hear or feel it snap into place. Press the spring to the bottom of the cylindrical boss to ensure proper function. Then you can reinstall the base. We will make note that the instructions need an update and we apologize for the inconvenience. We hope this helps you get your feeder back to functioning mode and that you can get back to feeding the birds! If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Customer Service Team at 1-800-352-9164. Thank you for flying with our flock!

squirrels can still chew the plastic and ruin this feeder

At first, I really liked this feeder, but the squirrels figured out how to stand on the pole without closing the guard tight so they chewed the plastic and the seed leaks out now. My second complaint is about the wire hanger they use which the wires break and cut my hands when I carry the feeders to fill them. Actually, I live on a lake with a lot of wind and they swing in the wind so hard that one of the wires broke and the feeder was on the ground with my squirrels enjoying themselves on Christmas morning.

Hi Renee, Thank you for your review of the Squirrel-X X-1 Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeder. We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing squirrel damage on your feeder. We would be happy to replace this feeder for you, free of charge. We will reach out to you via email to get that order placed for you. We appreciate your business and look forward to getting this resolved for you! Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. For the wind, if there is any way to place your feeder in a way that it is protected from direct wind, that would help solve the issue of the feeder blowing around, falling and loss of seed. It would also make a much more comfortable feeding experience for the birds that use it too. We hope this is helpful and again we will reach out to you via email to get that order placed for you. Thank you for flying with our flock!
