Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.
Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

Birds That Use This Feeder
Type Of Feed
Long Time Coming
We had an old feeder that became to expensive to get replacement parts for. Squirrel-Resistant seemed the answer. Unfortunately, our birds don’t seem to like the new feeder. We changed back to the old one, nope, we are being ignored. Haven’t given up completely, hanging it in a different location and hoping that works.
Hi Theresa, We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder (once they've discovered it, place it far enough away from a tree so that the squirrels won't get to it). Adding something like a colorful ribbon can also help, as the movement in the wind can make the birds feel like another bird has found the feeder to be safe. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon!
Love it but so does a small squirrel!
Maybe this squirrel is too light weight for it?? Ugh. At least it keeps the fat gray ones away.
Hi Mary, We're sorry to hear that you are having issues with squirrels accessing your Squirrel-X5. Have you tried adjusting the tension indicator to a lighter weight? Additionally, you may want to evaluate the placement of your feeder. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success. We hope this information helps!
This bird feeder really is squirrel proof. The smaller birds love it and it's easy to fill.
